CHICKENS

Why have chickens?

the more chicken people you ask the more reasons you will get to keep chickens.  But I will try to keep it reasonable.

EGGS EGGS EGGS  when you keep even a small flock of a few laying hens you will have a constant supply of fresh eggs.  I have had quite a few customers who are looking to keep chickens for good fresh chemical and hormone free eggs because of various health problems thay have had.  What is put into the chicken is put into the egg.

BUGS BUGS BUGS  When chickens are allowed to free range they are great at foraging for bugs in the yard.  They will eat just about any bug that comes along.

FUN FUN FUN  Ask any chicken owner and they will tell you they are just fun to have around.  We have a couple of chairs set up by the chicken coop and often just sit out with a cup of coffee and watch the chickens.

EDUCATION  Chickens are a very inexpensive and fun way to teach children about natural things.  We get alot of parents who bring thier children to pick out just a few chicks to raise.  We also get alot of 4-h kids.

VARIETY  There are more breeds of chickens than I could ever learn in a lifetime.  each breed has different abilites and uses.  There is something for everyone.

We try to carry a veriety of breeds and are getting different ones all the time.  we carry both roosters and hens.  Some of the breeds we carry are

frizzle

polish

Silkies

I also like to keep a variety of pullets for those who are just looking for laying hens.

polish chicken

POLISH ARE SOME OF THE FUNNEST CHICKENS AVAILABLE.

It is a soft feather lighter breed that lays white eggs.  They are not great layers and are non-sitters.  They come in a wide range of colors but all have the very identifiable "top hat"  a large tuft of feathers on the top of thier head.  Note that these feathers can hinder site so they can be a little more vulnerable to being picked on.

Frizzle chicken

the frizzle is the clown of the chicken world.  These are small feather footed little chickens that look like they have put thier beek in a light socket.  they come in white, red and black.  They lay small light brown eggs and are pretty good sitter and layers.

Silkie Chicken

The ever popular silkie chicken is a true bantam. They have black skin and very soft feathers.  They also have 5 toes.  They are great layers and sitters of white eggs.  They are known for being good moms and will sit eggs from other hens.  They come in many colors White, black, blue, buff, partriage. They are very popular and alot of fun to have.
